Need help asap! just turned on natural gas fireplace and smells funny?

we have a natural gas fireplace...the pilot light has been on for months, but we haven't turned on the actual fireplace past the pilot light since march or april. I just turned it on, and it smells funny...it smells a little like gas, its a sweet smell, but not overpowering...i went ahead and immediately cut the gas back to pilot light, but is it normal for it to smell funny the first few minuts its turned on for the first time in months? what should I do?
