Has anyone travelled on the state railway from Bangkok to Singapore?

We have 7 days to travel from BKK to Singapore and want to do it via the state railway. We want to stop off at maybe Ko Samui, Penang and Kuala Lumpur before we finally end up in Singapore. Has anyone done this? is it possible in that time? and has anyone got any tips/advise
