Why is it that blood has to be kept at 4 degrees celsius and needs to be buffered when stored?

I know that if the temperature was any lower, ice crystals would form in the cells damaging the membrane so that when the blood is thawed out the cells would be destroyed but what if the temperature is too high. It's got something to do with enzyme activity.
